I read in a few places that post race blues is a real thing and is similar to postpartum depression. Not sure if I really had the blues, or was depressed, but I have been having a hard time getting motivated over ever since the race. The house is so messy and laundry is piling up. Today is the first day that I woke and felt invigorated so hopefully this is the start of getting back on track. The unfortunate weather made the race a completely different endeavor than what I had trained for. The heat was unbearable, stifling. For example, during my 16 weeks of training I walked a total of two times, once during my first long run and the other when I ran Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-19883100804170629442012-04-11T13:50:00.002-04:002012-04-11T13:58:48.238-04:00Almost There!!Crazy stuff, can't believe it is only 5 days until the marathon. I feel like I haven't been running lately even though I have been running almost every other day for two weeks. The longest run I have done is 9 miles since the last 20 miler. Who am I to argue with the experts? It better work!My excitement is turning into a bit of nervousness as the day approaches. I will be fine as I am generally Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-49941377670696688342012-04-04T12:20:00.002-04:002012-04-04T12:45:25.877-04:00Why so Hard? Why is it so hard to wake up in the morning? Obviously we all love sleep, but waking up an hour earlier than normal should not be such an undertaking. I couldn't bring myself to get out of bed yesterday to do 8 miles. I knew that I better get up today and get it done or I would be going down a slippery slope that would end up with me not being prepared for the marathon. This week has been Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-79980212725301114922012-03-27T13:23:00.003-04:002012-03-27T13:37:20.549-04:0020 miles!!Well, I did 20 miles last night. Good news- I was able to get it done. Bad news- it didn't feel as good as the 18 felt last week. In the big picture I guess that really isn't bad news. There were wind gusts up to 40 mph from the North yesterday so whenever I was heading North I felt as though I was running in water. Today I am sore, nothing major, just tired and sore. I am probably kidding myselfTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-69750697595417840902012-03-20T09:01:00.002-04:002012-03-20T09:07:31.973-04:00Did I Mention, I am Going to do it!!18 miles last night. Ran the Falmouth Road Race course out and back and tacked on an extra 4 miles to get the eighteen. Felt good and finished in a decent amount of time. I have not been wearing a watch and do not plan to in the near future, but I estimate that I did it in around 3:15. I'll take it. I also took the time to get in some good stretching afterwards which is key to avoid next day Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-51366020705920144652012-03-19T13:31:00.002-04:002012-03-19T13:41:39.659-04:00Two more long runs!!Well, before the big day anyway. Just two more long training runs. The weather is amazing and I generally enjoy running in the cold. The temperature is well over 6o degrees today which will be nice, I guess. Saturday I did a medium run of 8 miles and it was the worst run I have had since the first week I ran. Two things against me:1. The day started out at 30 degrees and the wind was howling. I Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-84943760046845525862012-03-12T13:50:00.000-04:002012-03-13T10:33:14.117-04:0017, done! This past weekend was a busy one, no time for a long run so I had to get it in after school on Monday. I was a bit nervous that I would be too tired from the day, not to mention the jet lag from the daylight savings. Well, I got it done and it felt pretty good. I ended up stashing a couple water bottles on the route that I would pass a couple times at the 6 mile mark and 11 mile mark. I ran the Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-16732642605059026002012-03-08T11:42:00.003-05:002012-03-09T13:50:10.392-05:00Getting up EarlyI have always considered myself a night owl. Often I do not go to bed until at least 11 if not midnight even though I need to wake up at 6:30 to get ready for work. It has been fine over the years and I am happy that I can function on a small amount of sleep. However, over the past four weeks in particular my short and medium runs have been getting to a distance where I need to wake up anywhere Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-49605511689882911632012-03-05T10:32:00.006-05:002012-03-05T14:46:03.330-05:00Boston Marathon TrainingIt's working, I'm doing it. I am going to be able to run 26 miles, I know it. In hind sight I really wish I had been documenting my training from the start in this blog which has some how morphed into a life blog as opposed to just a fishing blog. I figure I can do a brief wrap up of what I have done so far and put down the rest from here on out.To start, this is my first marathon ever. Two yearsTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-39240017674615953982012-01-30T13:37:00.003-05:002012-01-30T13:50:36.916-05:00Training UpdateI am so happy with my marathon training. I am not lighting it up in the speed department, but that is fine with me. I am hoping to finish, nothing less, nothing more. I ran 10 miles on Saturday morning for my long run and that put my mileage total at 21 for the week. Since I started training I have lost almost 10 lbs. which is good in so many ways. Most importantly for my knees and joints that Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-56598683386328891222012-01-13T12:08:00.003-05:002012-01-13T12:26:12.674-05:00How to Make DonationsThere are a couple ways to make donations. The easiest way in my opinion is online. Crowdrise is dedicated to helping people have a safe venue to raise their funds. When you go to donate you pay through using an Amazon account (as in Amazon.com). It is very easy and very safe. It does ask you if you would like to add a processing fee, but you can easily say no. I am running with Team Joslin, the great diabetes treatment facility that has helped our family and specifically TJ so much since his diagnosis 5 years ago. If you can donate to help me raise $3000 it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to my fundraising site. If you have an Amazon Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-21082579363702660802011-05-27T10:58:00.002-04:002011-05-27T11:02:17.020-04:00A Nice FirstI couldn't believe my ears when TJ said, "Dad, can we go fishing after school?" awesome. I asked him where and he said, "on the boat". Unbelievable! Very excited about this. Not sure if the weather, fog or seas will cooperate for that trip to take place, but it sure was nice to hear him asking to go. If we get out and I can find the action from Wednesday he may just be hooked on fishing forever.Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-65721620769363580082011-05-26T12:20:00.002-04:002011-05-26T12:30:29.116-04:00First Trip of the SeasonYesterday I felt really sick and missed school. ;) ;) ;)After dropping Gwen off at school I got in the boat and met Gene at the Falmouth boat ramp at 9am. The plan was to go to middle ground and hope that some nice bass would be searching for squid. We got there and the tide was not set up right and when we went back at the end of the trip it was slack tide. Fortunately that was the only bad newsTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-40485965749048872072011-03-18T12:55:00.003-04:002011-03-18T13:10:45.229-04:00New Reel, What a Deal!Christine got me a great gift certificate to Falmouth Bait and Tackle and I was looking forward to using to get a new reel for casting to tuna with a little left over to put towards a nice rod to put it on. Realistically this would have totaled about $300, $200 of which would have been covered by the gift certificate. Well as luck, or coincidence would have it I got a lead on a lightly used rod Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-21680394470050302972011-03-08T11:41:00.002-05:002011-03-08T11:49:50.762-05:00Sorry for the long time inbetween postsNot sure why I stopped posting, it is a good way for me to relax and get some things off my chest. Work - With my new job as Music Curriculum Coordinator in Falmouth it has been very challenging to balance my two responsibilities. Unfortunately every time I have a concert coming up is when my job gets really stressful. There are always administrative type duties that also come up at the same timeTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-48616992846127326222010-08-13T10:37:00.002-04:002010-08-13T10:41:55.805-04:00Finally some fishHad a very disappointing trip out to Stellwagen Bank that saw no tuna and even stanger, no whales. That was a first. When leaving Marshfield last weekend I came across a huge school of fish that were mostly bass and I was able to get a couple nice 30" class fish before heading back to Falmouth. Went out at an insanely early time on Wednesday and caught a couple bass just under keeper size with Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-34829902202073783902010-07-19T11:16:00.002-04:002010-07-19T11:19:46.816-04:00Bust Out Another ThousandOr, B O A T!!!!That is what I heard before purchasing a boat and now I am starting to find out why. The most recent issue did not equal $1000, just $600. Clogged injectors is what I am told. Most likely from bad gas or faulty filters. $%^&!!! Should be getting back in a day or two which would be outstanding. Looking forward to getting back on the water and especially fishing.Going to be more Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-64006229906597056932010-07-07T14:36:00.003-04:002010-07-07T15:04:12.879-04:00A much needed updateFishing - I have been fishing a grand total of 2 times since my last post. Glad that I got a nice fish out of the way early this season or I would be majorly depressed. Still feel pretty crappy about the small amount of fishing that I have done, but some is better than none. I went fishing out of Bass River with a guy I met online at Stripersonline. We happened to share a lot of the same Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-46965675649053642242010-05-07T09:18:00.006-04:002010-05-07T09:24:55.974-04:00What a way to Start a New Season!!I have only been fishing a few times during lunch breaks at my favorite early season spots with only a couple hits to show for my efforts. Thomas told me earlier this week that he wanted to eat some bluefish so I told him that we would go fishing on Thursday night. So we go to our favorite early season bluefish hot spot and it was windy and cold. I did see one fish caught, but TJ was not going toTomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-68894788480021574702010-04-26T09:53:00.004-04:002010-04-26T10:04:00.650-04:00Playing Trumpet with the FamousOver school vacation I had two salsa gigs. The first one was in Hartford at the Expo Center where "the Rolling Stones of Salsa", Gran Combo was the headlining band. Salsa Night Band was the first of three bands and it was quite a trip for $150 and four songs. Bad sound men do not make for a positive performance, but at least Gran Combo had their own sound guy and they sounded excellent. Nothing Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-52096353179866584892010-03-28T18:20:00.005-04:002010-03-28T18:30:10.575-04:00Fun time on the iceLast night I laced up the skates to play hockey for the first time in 18 years or so. What a fun time. This was a fundraiser for the girls hockey scholarship for Falmouth High School. Together we raised $715. Awesome job everybody. It was exciting to get a couple goals and it was a blast playing with people of all ability levels. A few people were playing for the first time which was fun to see. It is incredible. I have not run since the road race, but remember for the three or four weeks prior to the race that I was absolutely ravenous. When I weighed myself the week before the race I figured that I would have put on 5 pounds knowing what and how much I had eaten. Nope, lost 5 pounds!! Well, at Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109821019711122383.post-78694450038713201312010-03-03T11:01:00.002-05:002010-03-03T11:08:15.221-05:00I did it!!Ran the half marathon. Very exciting. I was very happy to finish it without walking. I started the race off a bit too fast which ended up hurting my pace down the stretch, but you live and learn. Before my next race I will be investing in a GPS watch that will help me calculate my pace. Finished the race in 2h 15m. A little slower than a 10 minute mile pace. This has been my experience so far Tomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15958136844105191594noreply@blogger.com1
